The Derby and District Organists' Association were privileged to host the IAO's (Incorporated Association of Organists) 2010 Midlands Organ Day. This was held in Derby Cathedral and in St. John the Evangelist, Bridge Street.

It was a fine autumn day sandwiched between two days of torrential down pours.

The day started with registration, tea, coffee and biscuits at 10am.

At 10.15 the Acting Dean welcomed us to the Cathedral and Peter Williams, the Chairman of the DDOA followed with his welcome.

From 10.30 to 11.30 there was a talk on the organ builder John Compton, who built the organ in Derby Cathedral. This was given by Ian Bell.

Between 11.30 and 12.20 Peter Gould, Master of Music at the Cathedral gave a recital on the Compton Organ

The DDOA's "Children at the Organ" team then gave a presentation in the Retro-Choir about their work with children in schools, finishing for lunch at 1.00pm

The afternoon session opened at 2.15 in St. John's Bridge Street with Paul Hale, Rector Chori of Southwell Minster, playing the newly rebuilt 'Willis' organ. Peter Williams again welcomed everyone to St John’s. To show the organ in the role for which it was intended, Andrew Storer, organist at St. John's, led the singing of a hymn. Paul Hale interviewed Edmund Stow who was the organ builder responsible for the organ's rebuild. To close Edmund played a piece on the organ.

Moving back to the Cathedral at 3.30. Paul Hale gave a 'masterclass' on two pieces from the IAO's "Millennium Organ Book" . Paul Hale took Laurence Rogers through "Dithyramb" by Andrew Fletcher and Denis Littleton through “Triptych of the Holy Trinity” by John Harper on the two manual Cousans organ in the Retro-Choir.

This was followed at 4.30 by tea and coffee in the Cathedral Centre or remaining in the Cathedral for the choir rehearsal by the Cathedral Girls’ Choir

The day closed with Choral Evensong at 5.15
